Index of People

The human beings who appear across this edition are at the heart of our work on the Keywords for Black Louisiana project. This page centers their names and biographies and also shares the reference tag (e.g., kl123) that we have used to identify them. When Africans and people of African descent whose names are not mentioned and are therefore unknown appear in the stories, we have identified them here with a reference tag. The reference tag is connected to either a kinship relationship with another individual or to the activity they were engaged in when we encountered them in the documents. The biographies are particularly attentive to kinship relations, and you can learn more about each of these individuals and their presence and actions in the stories by clicking on the links that appear below their information.
