He finished in fine form with the shrill cockrel crow that they use\n and with his drumstick suspended in the air, as he threw a funny look of bravado at\n <tei-persName ref=\"#LS\" data-origname=\"persName\" data-origatts=\"ref\">Stokowski</tei-persName> as much to say, <tei-q data-origname=\"q\">If you really want to\n hear something, there's a song!</tei-q> Everyone in the room stamped and clapped with\n excitement, the Mexicans as well, and the two directors rushed up to <tei-persName ref=\"#TL\" data-origname=\"persName\" data-origatts=\"ref\">Tony</tei-persName> and grabbed him. <tei-q data-origname=\"q\">But this is <tei-emph data-origname=\"emph\">mag nif i\n cent</tei-emph></tei-q>exclaimed <tei-persName ref=\"#LS\" data-origname=\"persName\" data-origatts=\"ref\">Stokowski</tei-persName>. <tei-q data-origname=\"q\">I never\n knew there was anything like this.</tei-q> The two musicians put their heads together\n and began a technical frenzy of discussion. <tei-persName ref=\"#MR\" data-origname=\"persName\" data-origatts=\"ref\">Madame's</tei-persName> daughter rushed upstairs and dragged the two blameless daughters of the consul General out of bed \nand brought them downstairs so they should not miss such an evening. <tei-persName ref=\"#TL\" data-origname=\"persName\" data-origatts=\"ref\">Tony</tei-persName> sang a collection of songs from\n different tribes, and they never let him stop - but finally he came to an end and\n raising his drumstick to the Mexicans at the end of the room he called in Spanish:\n <tei-pb facs=\"p10\" n=\"10\" data-origname=\"pb\" data-origatts=\"n facs\" data-empty=\"\"/>\n <tei-q data-origname=\"q\">Now you, boys</tei-q> and they flung themselves into a Spanish-indian fandango, <tei-persName ref=\"#CM\" data-origname=\"persName\" data-origatts=\"ref\"><tei-choice data-origname=\"choice\"><tei-corr data-origname=\"corr\">Concha Michel</tei-corr><tei-sic data-origname=\"sic\">Maria\n Concha</tei-sic></tei-choice></tei-persName> singing and dancing it. They had now all had\n their third round of cognac and they did their utmost to supercede the singing they\n had just heard. They rocked and stamped and gave occassional yells. They made noise.\n But it was empty. It lacked that strange religious fervor that true indian music has,\n and which embues it with fascination and glamour, and more than all, stimulates and\n excites and consoles those who listen to it, as though it would reassure and\n strengthen a failing humanity. The musicians in the room listened more or less\n politely to the Mexican band from <tei-placeName data-origname=\"placeName\">Jalisco</tei-placeName> but they were not\n interested. <tei-persName ref=\"#FFP\" data-origname=\"persName\" data-origatts=\"ref\">Mrs. Payne</tei-persName> murmured to me: <tei-q data-origname=\"q\">I love it\n so - I hate to think it is passing away!</tei-q>\n <tei-q data-origname=\"q\"><tei-emph data-origname=\"emph\">Is</tei-emph> it</tei-q> I asked incredulously. All\n the town was plastered with huge posters saying merely <tei-q data-origname=\"q\"><tei-persName ref=\"#LS\" data-origname=\"persName\" data-origatts=\"ref\">Stokowski!</tei-persName></tei-q> On bill boards, booths, and even across church\n doors, but when we tried to buy tickets we couldn't find out where they were sold.\n Finally someone said they were on sale in a music store so we went and asked there on\n a Thursday. Although the concert was to take place on Saturday night, no tickets yet!\n The man said, <tei-q data-origname=\"q\">Tickets very slow in Mexico! Maybe tomorrow!</tei-q> So after being out\n all day in the country, we motored to town about four o'clock and the shop had only\n just opened! Just the same, nearly all the tickets were gone already! In a small room\n at the back of the store I found several people, <tei-persName ref=\"#MD\" data-origname=\"persName\" data-origatts=\"ref\">Mary\n Doherty</tei-persName>, <tei-persName ref=\"#MS\" data-origname=\"persName\" data-origatts=\"ref\">Sáenz's</tei-persName> Secretary among them.\n <tei-persName ref=\"#FT1\" data-origname=\"persName\" data-origatts=\"ref\">Frank Tannenbaum</tei-persName> had asked her to secure tickets\n for us when she <tei-corr data-origname=\"corr\">got</tei-corr> hers though I didn't know this. </tei-p>\n <tei-p data-origname=\"p\"> On a chair, leaning against the back of it, was a diagram of the theatre. People had\n to get down on the floor and pick out the seats they wanted and stick pins in them.\n We got seats rather far back, unfortunately. </tei-p>\n <tei-p data-origname=\"p\"> We had an engagement to tea with <tei-persName ref=\"#FT2\" data-origname=\"persName\" data-origatts=\"ref\">Frances Toor</tei-persName> and\n drove over to her apartment house. On the fifth floor she had the equivalent of a\n pent house, with a parrot swinging at the front door. The building leaned over so\n much that the floor sloped rapidly to one side. She had some rooms with cream walls\n and all the doors and windows painted green, and there was a fine view over the city.\n She is a rather coarse featured Russian Jewess who says she was never happy <tei-pb facs=\"p13\" n=\"13\" data-origname=\"pb\" data-origatts=\"n facs\" data-empty=\"\"/> till she came to Mexico, where everyone is so kind and\n unselfconsciously smiling, and where one cannot be lonely. She has made a fine\n collection in the seven years she has been here of old indian and mexican chests,\n pottery, and textiles. She was rather mean about several people - for instance she\n said <tei-persName ref=\"#EG\" data-origname=\"persName\" data-origatts=\"ref\">Emma</tei-persName> hadn't the poetry or the knowledge to write\n the book she has gone home to write, and she said little <tei-persName ref=\"#FFP\" data-origname=\"persName\" data-origatts=\"ref\">Mrs.\n Payne</tei-persName> has got hold of several rich women in America and is exploiting\n Mexico to them, selling things for $5.00 that cost her five cents, and selling the\n paintings of poor young Mexican artists to them and taking 1/3 in commissions. </tei-p>\n <tei-p data-origname=\"p\"> Suddenly she got a phone message and came back and told us that <tei-persName ref=\"#LS\" data-origname=\"persName\" data-origatts=\"ref\">Stokowski</tei-persName> and <tei-persName ref=\"#FK\" data-origname=\"persName\" data-origatts=\"ref\">Keppel</tei-persName> (the head of the\n <tei-corr data-origname=\"corr\">Carnegie</tei-corr> Foundation) were about to be interviewed and <tei-persName ref=\"#FFP\" data-origname=\"persName\" data-origatts=\"ref\">Mrs. Payne</tei-persName> wanted her to come over to the Hotel Geneve - and\n that she thought she'd better go! However, that her maid <tei-persName ref=\"#L\" data-origname=\"persName\" data-origatts=\"ref\">Leonora</tei-persName> had prepared something for us and we must eat. We said we\n would, and not to bother about us - she ran off and <tei-persName ref=\"#L\" data-origname=\"persName\" data-origatts=\"ref\">Leonora</tei-persName> brought in a red and white paper tablecloth and spread the\n table for a meal! We were aghast for we had had a hearty meal at two o'clock over in\n <tei-placeName data-origname=\"placeName\"><tei-corr data-origname=\"corr\">Toluca.</tei-corr></tei-placeName> Just the same, she served us with perfectly delicious enchiladas, puree of beans, large rolls and coffee, \nfollowed by a jelly of exotic fruit and sweet cakes! We just couldn't eat. It was only five o'clock. <tei-persName ref=\"#IR\" data-origname=\"persName\" data-origatts=\"ref\">Ida</tei-persName> put hers in a paper napkin and carried it away\n in her hand bag - so not to hurt any feelings. I toyed with mine - <tei-persName ref=\"#TL\" data-origname=\"persName\" data-origatts=\"ref\">Tony</tei-persName> did pretty well. When we were through we left - stuffed! </tei-p>\n <tei-p data-origname=\"p\"> The concert was set for 9 o'clock but did not start until nearly 10. It was in a\n large theatre and was very informal. There isn't a yard of red tape in this whole\n country. The four sopranos and contraltos came in to join the orchestra and took ages\n <tei-pb facs=\"p14\" n=\"14\" data-origname=\"pb\" data-origatts=\"n facs\" data-empty=\"\"/> to get themselves fixed just right - their chairs, their\n skirts and all. <tei-persName ref=\"#CC\" data-origname=\"persName\" data-origatts=\"ref\">Chávez</tei-persName> came in, bowed coldly to the\n audience and faced his orchestra. He had a marvelous dress suit that moulded his\n beautiful figure and from the back, baton raised, he looked like a Toreador. He gave\n the <tei-corr data-origname=\"corr\">Daphnis</tei-corr> and Chloe of <tei-persName ref=\"#JMR\" data-origname=\"persName\" data-origatts=\"ref\">Ravel</tei-persName> and in a\n flash one sensed how <tei-emph data-origname=\"emph\">musical</tei-emph> his orchestra is, how much more\n <tei-emph data-origname=\"emph\">musical</tei-emph> than ours. We did not seem to be hearing trained musicians\n playing on fine instruments. It was a direct flow of pure sound, exquisitely alive -\n with a vibration one does not get in America. It came into being like light, like\n sunshine; it was elemental like fire or air - immediate and transforming to the\n listener who perceived it directly like warmth and not through the brain as opinion\n or appreciation. </tei-p>\n <tei-p data-origname=\"p\">\n <tei-persName ref=\"#CC\" data-origname=\"persName\" data-origatts=\"ref\">Chávez</tei-persName> directing was one with the music. We had called\n him inexpressive and cold! On his job he was not personal. It was not <tei-persName ref=\"#CC\" data-origname=\"persName\" data-origatts=\"ref\">Chávez</tei-persName> interpreting a musical score. He became the thing -\n his body took the lines of the lyrical melody - he flowed into it and it flowed\n through him. He was like the composition - infinitely graceful and poetic. He swayed\n and his physique was capable of endless plastic subtleties. He poised himself like a\n butterfly - his baton and his long fingers were like delicate antennae. The orchestra\n passed itself out in shimmering waves. This was another dimension in symphonic\n orchestration. We get nothing like it at home. </tei-p>\n <tei-p data-origname=\"p\">\n <tei-persName ref=\"#CC\" data-origname=\"persName\" data-origatts=\"ref\">Chávez</tei-persName> followed this with a composition of his called\n \"Indian Ballet\" in four parts, showing air, water, fire, and earth. In an interval\n before he started the composition he stood before the orchestra - baton raised. His\n lines had altered, grown severe- angular and archaic. His proud head sprang from his\n high broad shoulders - sharp in outline and fierce like a piece of black volcanic <tei-pb facs=\"p15\" n=\"15\" data-origname=\"pb\" data-origatts=\"n facs\" data-empty=\"\"/> glass. His figure was archaic - with its narrow hips and long\n straight legs. <tei-persName ref=\"#IR\" data-origname=\"persName\" data-origatts=\"ref\">Ida</tei-persName> whispered to me that he looked like a piece of Etruscan bronze but I saw the Aztec calligraphy, \nthe sharp, virile, dangerous Aztec speech, with its x's, tc's and yl's! \nHe started the men and instantly we were transported to another earlier world than this - of other purer elements, and incomprehensible motivations; a world where other powers than ours ruled over the earth, \nwhere all the shapes were different. \nI feel certain that no European can ever direct this music of <tei-persName ref=\"#CC\" data-origname=\"persName\" data-origatts=\"ref\">Chávez</tei-persName>. It takes one with his blood. \nHe has somehow gone back and touched the Aztec spring. The music had the configuration of the Codices and their bright colors. It was fierce, delicate, ruthless and completely different from anything I have ever heard or imagined. \nThat it contained motives that suggested a harmonious acceptance of blood sacrifice does not describe it. It was simply of another life. \nAs he directed it his back was all we have seen in antique and archaic sculptures here. He made one <tei-emph data-origname=\"emph\">know</tei-emph>\n the Aztec era, and surely reading the colored picture writing of the Codices after\n hearing and seeing that Indian Ballet one could come nearer its reality. This\n experience was a rare one for me. To think of <tei-persName ref=\"#CC\" data-origname=\"persName\" data-origatts=\"ref\">Chávez</tei-persName>\n and <tei-persName ref=\"#DR\" data-origname=\"persName\" data-origatts=\"ref\"><tei-corr data-origname=\"corr\">Rivera</tei-corr></tei-persName> coming out of Mexico - easily\n the two greatest living artists! </tei-p>\n <tei-p data-origname=\"p\"> There came an <tei-corr data-origname=\"corr\">entracte</tei-corr>. <tei-persName ref=\"#TL\" data-origname=\"persName\" data-origatts=\"ref\">Tony</tei-persName> went out\n and returned having met the Mexican who was on the train from <tei-placeName data-origname=\"placeName\">El\n Paso</tei-placeName> when we came. He told <tei-persName ref=\"#TL\" data-origname=\"persName\" data-origatts=\"ref\">Tony</tei-persName> he was\n minister of <tei-corr data-origname=\"corr\">education</tei-corr> and to come soon to see him in his office. I asked\n <tei-persName ref=\"#FT1\" data-origname=\"persName\" data-origatts=\"ref\">Frank</tei-persName> who was there, who the minister is now. He bowed and then turned swiftly about\n and summoned the orchestra to their feet in a loud triumphant blazing of the Mexican\n National Anthem! In a flash, with one impulsive movement the audience was on its feet\n cheering and they stood throughout the piece - Mexicans and <tei-corr data-origname=\"corr\">Americans</tei-corr>\n mingled, smiling. It was a most charming and endearing gesture from <tei-persName ref=\"#LS\" data-origname=\"persName\" data-origatts=\"ref\">Stokowski</tei-persName>.
