G likely denotes Groove, or a pulley system with\n different grooves in the floor that allowed upright painted scenes, known as flats, to\n change by sliding across the stage in late eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century\n productions. Overhead rigging largely replaced flats and grooves by the 1860s. </tei-p>\n </tei-note><tei-note type=\"theatrical\" xml:id=\"note205\" id=\"note205\" data-origname=\"note\" data-origatts=\"xml:id type\">A “Chinese lantern” seems to be a “magic lantern” or\n “phantasmagoria” technology, which involved the use of multiple painted slides mounted on a\n mobile light projector to create static, moving, growing, or shrinking images.\n <tei-bibl data-origname=\"bibl\">(Terence Rees, <tei-title data-origname=\"title\">Theatre Lighting in the Age of Gas</tei-title>, London: The\n Society of Theatre Research, pp. 81-84)</tei-bibl>.
